Digital Video Recorder

A Digital Video Recorder (DVR) is a device that records video without the aid of video tape to a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) based digital storage medium. These systems are usually known as stand alone units. Digital Video Recorders configured for paranormal field applications record video signals from Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Cameras for detection and documentation purposes. Many of these units are designed to record audio as well.

DVRs have evolved into devices that are feature rich and provide services that exceed the simple recording of video images that was previously done through VCRs. A DVR CCTV system provides a8_ch_dvr.jpg (46601 bytes) multitude of advanced functions over VCR technology including video searches by event, time, date, and camera. There is also much more control over quality and frame rate allowing disk drive space usage to be optimized, and the DVT can also be programmed to overwrite the last case footage recorded, should the disk drive space become full. In some DVR systems remote access to case footage using a PC can also be achieved by connecting the DVR to a LAN network or the Internet.

Most DVR systems are available as a Multiplex, which is a feature that comes in handy in this field. A DVMR Multiplex system lets you view a specific event on a recording while the DVR is still recording in standard time. Most of these units are set up as a BNC connection, but can be converted to a more standard AV cable hookup by adapting a converter connector simply called a BNC to RCA connector, this will make Infrared camera hookup simpler and much faster.

DVRs range in cost from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars and are available in 4, 8, and 16 channel, depending on the types of investigations that one is going to do, they are a wonderful tool. DVRs are devices that are taken from the main field of their use which is the security and surveillance services and applied to the Paranormal field. In reality, the Paranormal investigation field has no real equipment that we can claim as ghost detection devices. Most of the devices that we acquire for this field are from other industries and then are applied to paranormal investigation and research.

On a more personal note, as technology advances are being made on a daily basis, I believe that we (Paranormal Investigators ) will greatly benefit from the tools that will be created for this up and ever growing field so that we can find the truth and have facts instead of theories.

    Happy Hunting.
