EMF Meters 101 by Arthur Matos | E-Mail Hello to all fellow ghost hunters and all who are interested in knowing a bit more about the use of EMF meters in the paranormal field. The Electro Magnetic Field Meter, aka EMF/Gauss meter, is a device that is originally used to detect the Electric and Magnetic fields surrounding an area. These fields are measured for specific reasons; one major reason is for the disbursement of a specific frequency that comes from power lines or as I call it, electro toxin. These power lines are one of many reasons why this little device is used to measure the amount of disruption and/or possible harmful effects caused by the amount of invisible waves that are emitted by power lines themselves. OK, great, most of us may be aware of how this little device works (a single or triple coil that's amplified to detect certain frequencies) but how is it used in the paranormal field?
The Electromagnetic Field meter is a device which many scientific paranormal investigators use to One must have an open mind when dealing with the paranormal, and at the same time remain professional and have an objective mind as well. An EMF meter works to detect the presence of an energy fluctuation. Most baseline readings vary, but a standard reading of a room should be between 0.2 to 0.7. This is not always the case because in this day and age of technology, you must be so careful in doing an accurate reading. There are many factors; any type of equipment may contaminate the reading (e.g., cell phones, computers, routers and any type of cable that is not properly insulated, such as Romex). For the novice, please don't think that once you get a 2.5 milliGauss reading that you have a ghost. An EMF meter is NOT a ghost detector. It is simply a device where you can get an electromagnetic reading of an area, and if you start to have fluctuations, the first thing that any good investigator will do is search for the reason for the fluctuation! When all other possibilities are exhausted (e.g., computers, light switches, wiring in walls), then and only then can you truly say that you may have an anomaly. There are many types of Meters. Myself and the team prefers the three-axis digital meters, since they are easily read and are quite accurate. For the novice, a nice single-axis digital is great, has an easy to read digital view, and cost wise is a few hundred less. Remember, an EMF detector is NOT a ghost finder. I can't stress that point enough, because many investigators starting out think that that's how it works. The meter is simply a way of finding a change or disruption in the electromagnetic field and that disruption may give you heads up on how to perceive what you're looking for and it will also help you to determine its path on where it's going. So if you have any question's regarding starting out on the field and the equipment that is helpful to have, please don't hesitate to write and ask. |
