Parabolic Microphone

A Parabolic Microphone uses a parabolic reflector (or dish) to collect and focus sound waves onto a microphone receiver, in much the same way that a parabolic antenna (e.g. satellite dish) does with radio waves. Typical uses of this microphone, which has unusually focused front sensitivity, can pick up sounds from many meters away, include nature recordings, field audio for sports broadcasting, eavesdropping, law enforcement, and even espionage

Parabolic Microphones are generally not used for standard recording applications, because they tend to have poor low frequency response as a side effect pf their design. This is a direct result of the physical laws that govern sound waves. Parabolas (and these parabolic dishes) only focus waves with a wavelength much smaller than the diameter of the parabola (dish).

Since sound waves travel at 342 m/s through the air (speed of sound), to get hi-fidelity sound (down to 20 Hz, the lower limit of human hearing) would require a parabola with a diameter greater than 342 m/s / 20 Hz=17 meters in diameter. Most Parabolic Microphones sacrifice fidelity to get a more manageable size.

So now we come to the use of Parabolic Microphones in the paranormal field. The use of parabolics have been used for many decades and play an important role in an Investigators arsenal of tools. As we previously said, we sacrifice the fidelity for manageable size, so we can handle a basic 12" diameter dish.
However, if we are to use this device in a basic location, about the size of a 20 X 30 room, then one can possibly capture EVP's in real time, of course theoretical, nevertheless possible.

The advantage of this device is to amplify the sound wave of where the EVP is being produced from and give one a clearer yet amplified sound. The disadvantage is that to get the perfect location sound wave of where the EVP is coming from, one must point the parabola in its direction. The means and uses of the Parabolic Mics are far and wide, however it is up to the Investigator to put it to the test and use it under a controlled environment (interior).

Happy Hunting
